Characters

Sharaku Housuke - As the last descendant of a race of superintelligent beings (mittsumezoku, lit. "three-eyed people"), Sharaku has a wicked streak and ambition to remake the world in his own image - not to mention the intelligence and wit to do so. His power is thus kept in check by the bandage that covers his third eye, rendering him docile.

Sharaku is a junior high school student (around 15 years old) but, when bandaged, has the mentality of a much younger child. He enjoys playing with the pre- and primary-school children, who look up to him as a big brother. Orphaned as an infant, he was entrusted to Kenmochi's care, but more often than not is left with Higeoyaji while Kenmochi travels on business. He is most frequently under the watchful eye of Wato, as he is prone to accidents and being easily distracted when his third eye is sealed.

When Sharaku's darker side comes out, it is clear that his intelligence level is astronomical and he can also wield a number of mysterious powers, including psychokinesis. He is a mechanical genius with an obvious scorn for the human race that deposed the mittsumezoku...but at the same time, he finds himself occasionally weak during moments when his personality calls for leaving his human companions to their fates. He has nearly succeeded in wiping out the city on more than one occasion, and usually the achilles' heel that halts his plan is Wato, either through her direct intervention or his persisting desire to keep her close. He has professed love for her numerous times, and stolen her first kiss.

Sharaku's name comes from famous ukiyo-e woodblock painer Sharaku Toshusai, who gained notoriety and fame for his deviational kabuki artwork in the Edo period, along with the fact that this name was a pseudonym and his identity was never revealed. Three-eyed Sharaku's pose and art style in the first Mittsume ga Tooru eyecatch is based on Toshusai's painting of Kabuki actor Otani Oniji II portraying the role of Yakko Edobe.

Sharaku's appearance changes slightly based on medium and his personality at the time. In all cases he is extremely short and bald. He is usually depicted wearing a gakuran-style boys' school uniform, which is a dark blue-black in manga colour artwork and a royal blue in the animated version. The latter also features the roman number II on the collar to indicate that he is a second-year student. When Sharaku's third eye is uncovered, in the anime, his uniform's colour changes to black, and he will usually remove the jacket up to its collar buttons and wear it at a cape. Some manga stories also show the cape style, but usually only when Sharaku has serious intentions of carrying out a conquest plan; otherwise he wears his jacket normally or simply unbuttoned.

Wato Chiyoko - Wato is the daughter of a Buddhist shrine keeper, also a junior high school student, and a very headstrong girl. She is a tomboy, referring to herself by the male pronoun boku, and a practicer of archery and kendo, as well as various martial arts. Living in relative seclusion, Sharaku is Wato's closest friend, though she is sometimes seen associating (usually camping) with classmates Takashi and Osamu. During the early part of the series, a number of boys in her acquantance seem to be enamoured with her, but she only concerns herself with Sharaku...particularly his dormant, devilish side, whom she will take any opportunity to release. Unfortunately for Sharaku, Wato also seems to be frightened by his other self, and is quick to seal him again at the first sign of danger.

Wato is tall and willowy with short brown hair. She is drawn in an array of clothing, many of which (despite her tomboyish nature) are skirts and flatter her figure. She is often shown wearing kimono, hakama (a style of traditional Japanese dress now mostly seen in martial arts) or her school uniform, which is a sailor style, green with a red sash in the animated version and blue and blue in Tezuka's colour art and the more updated Tezuka Productions works based on it.

Ban Shunsaku (Higeoyaji) - Owner of a Tokyo ramen shop and a good friend of Kenmochi. Higeoyaji has had to do a fair amount of caring for Sharaku, who can't be left alone when his father is away. Sharaku occasionally helps out in the ramen shop, but his distractable nature and clumsiness usually make more trouble for Higeoyaji. His nickname means 'mustached old man' in English.

Ban is mostly bald; what little hair he does have is black, and the long mustache he is nicknamed for is a stark white. He's most often seen wearing working clothes, in most cases a white shirt and an apron at the waist, often with a chef's hat or a white hachimaki headband. Otherwise, his dress is usually near-identical to his depictures in roles outside of Mittsume ga Tooru, including suit, hat and checkered bow tie.

Kenmochi-kyouju - Sharaku's abilities began to manifest at an early age, as he was being raised by Kenmochi. Kenmochi is very aware of the danger Sharaku poses, having been nearly killed by his adopted son on several occasions, and refuses to unseal his eye except under the most dire of circumstances...or when he has a pressing question. Like Wato, he tends to take off the bandage selfishly and reapply it once he's gotten what he needs, a fact that cannot have escaped Sharaku's notice. Still, Sharaku displays some level of loyalty to his adopted father, saving him from danger when possible.

Kenmochi is of medium height with thick, bushy eyebrows, greying hair and a mustache. He usually dresses in a suit and tie.

Osamu - Osamu is an anime-only character based on Tezuka Osamu. He is Sharaku's classmate, and is portrayed as a nervous sort who likes to keep himself out of trouble. At times it has been indicated that Osamu (like the rest of her male classmates) may be interested in Wato romantically. He wears thick, round glasses and has a bulbous nose, and when in uniform is usually seen wearing his black student cap.

Takashi - While featuring occasionally in the manga, Takashi is seen far more often in the anime in Sharaku's small circle of friends. He is a little more quick to action, but is meek as well, preventing him from helping Sharaku much when he's being picked on. Takashi has beady black eyes and is faily tall. He and Osamu are good friends.

Bankara - A member of the Judo Club, Bankara is Sharaku's classmate and could be considered a member of Kido's group, but truthfully he likes Sharaku and tries to protect him. He is one of the few people who know about Sharaku's Three-Eyed personality. Bankara is tall and heavyset with short black hair, and wears his student cap frayed.

Moa - Originally an egg left under Sharaku's care when its mother, a Giant Moa (an extinct species unique to New Zealand) was killed, little Moa hatched and began living with him. She (gender is ambiguous, but appears to be female) is quite intelligent and loves Sharaku, though Wato isn't fond of the bird. Moa has the ability to fly; though her species has no wings, she can charge up her backside and fly like a rocket when need be. When she is older, she is capable of carrying people while flying. Very playful and vocal (though she cannot speak human languages), Moa also has a soft spot for Higeoyaji's gyoza dumplings.

Unmei-keibu - A Star System character based on Ludwig van Beethoven, Unmei is a frequent guest in both manga and anime versions of Mittsume ga Tooru. He is a police chief, and is one of the characters who has seen Sharaku as the Three-Eyed One in action. Not much is known about his past or his personality, but he appears to be very dedicated to his work and cool in a crisis.
